Today let's talk about the status of marijuana in the four states that surround Wyoming. But first, did you know that most Americans can possess marijuana legally? In the US 38 of our 50 states have legalized medical marijuana. And 18 of those 38 states have legalized recreational marijuana. However, Wyoming is holding out. We are currently surrounded on all four sides of states that have legalized some form of marijuana and marijuana. Is legal in our neighboring countries of Canada and Mexico. Legalization is still controversial because there's a belief that marijuana is a gateway drug to other drugs. On the other hand, marijuana has proven medical benefits that can help with various ailments and it's less dangerous than some legal prescription drugs. With that, here's the status of marijuana in our neighboring states. Number one, Colorado. Did you know there are more marijuana dispensaries in this state than Starbucks and McDonald's combined? Residents and tourists over the age of 21 can buy up to one ounce of marijuana and eight grams of concentrates. Number two Montana. In 2020 voters legalized recreational marijuana for adults 21 and over. And just this year, the state allowed stores to begin sales. Number three, Utah. This conservative state legalized medical marijuana way back in 2019 and there's not any talk of legalizing recreational use right now. Number four South Dakota. It was the first state to vote in favor of both medical and recreational use at the same time. However, the governor and South Dakota Supreme Court did not agree with the voters. So as of now, only medical marijuana is allowed. State lawmakers are currently trying to create rules around selling marijuana in stores. It seems likely this fall, South Dakota voters will again vote to legalize recreational use. But it may take more time to figure out the rules around selling marijuana in stores.
